I also did a side by side of Bitwarden and 1Password. With that in mind, what do I think? I joined after this controversy and have found 1Password very good. Growing past a small handful of platforms, each with their own idiosyncrasies and "native" frameworks is a nightmare how can you insure the app works consistently with the same UI/UX feel across all the platforms users need to access their passwords if you have a unique "native" codeline for each platform? A one time sale of a security software is a bad and unsustainable business model, security threats are ever evolving and need constant time and money to combat. Local vaults are not what most users need, most users need passwords across their devices and then having them rely on iCloud, Dropbox, or OneDrive is cludgy and error prone. If I was one of the original users that relied on and loved those old features I would be upset too. These were drastic changes and some of the major differentiators 1Password had versus the competitors were now gone for better or for worse 1Password is now more similar to the other major PW managers. They dropped support for local vaults, they moved to a subscription only model, and they did a major rewrite of the app, v8, in Electron (no longer a "native" app) to make it more consistent and easier to dev across platforms but also meant some legacy features were lost in the rewrite and are slowly being added back.
